Help With Stain Quantity

Before you or your contractor buy stain, find out exactly how much you'll need. If more than one area is being painted with the same product, add up the total square footage.

PLEASE NOTE: These calculations are not intended to give more than a rough estimate. Precise stain needs will vary according to many factors, including application method. These calculations assume 1 coat of stain, please refer to your product to determine how many coats are required. It is also important to recognize that all wood takes stain different, the below chart outlines rough guidelines to consider for coverage per gallon of product based on different surfaces.

Smooth Surface New Wood Coverage Rate - 200-225 SF per Gallon
Rough Surface New Wood Coverage Rate - 125-150 SF per Gallon
Smooth Surface Old Wood Coverage Rate - 150-175 SF per Gallon
Rough Surface Old Wood Coverage Rate - 100-125 SF per Gallon

TINTED PRODUCT IS NOT RETURNABLE

Use the following formula to estimate the amount of stain you need. Double the result if the project requires two coats, triple the result if the project requires three coats.
1. Multiply the length of the area by the height of the area, to find the total project area.
2. Divide this figure by the appropriate stain coverage in the above chart, and the result is the number of gallons to purchase for one coat.
3. Multiply this figure by 2 and the result is the number of gallons to purchase for two coats.
